Employer Profile

Obviously this whole experience was possible with the foundation of a dynamic, international internship program. Here is a quick summary of my company and how I spend about 10 hrs/day.

Sivantos Pte. Ltd

Design and manufacturing of hearing aids

Summer 2018

Global Engineering Operations

New Product Integration

Singapore is the global HQ of the company that also has branches in Germany, Japan, and the USA. We are located at the Tai Seng MRT Station

With roots dating back to 1878 through Siemens Healthineers, Sivantos Group has a long history of owners and subsidiaries. Their most recent "rebrand" stemmed from the sale of Siemens Audiology in 2015. This lead to the creation of their premium brand, Signia, in 2016 and an entire move and remodel of their global headquarters in late 2017. The new office was a big step in establishing Sivantos' next generation image and company culture. The modern, open feel of the space is clearly influenced by sound waves and collaboration.

A very unique aspect of this company is their commitment to manufacturing in Singapore. Due to the space constraints of the small country, industry is very rare. Besides some R&D that is carried out in Erlangen, Germany, all of the development, testing, and manufacturing of the hearing aids takes place within the three floors of HQ. This is made possible by the small size of the product, as well as regulations and support from the government that encourages Singapore made products.

While I was assigned to work under the New Product Integration department, my work flowed into Production Engineering as well. I have, and will be mainly working on proper documentation of newly released product. Similar to how companies function in the states, if work is slow in my department, I will be allowed to assist others where necessary.

The working environment here has its similarities and differences to what I have experienced in the US, to name a few...

Differences

• Longer work days - a standard work week is AT LEAST 45 hrs, compared to 40 in the US. As an intern I am expected to work 10 hr/day plus a 45 min lunch.

• Intense environment - everyone seems to be "laser focused" on work, allowing little room for a relaxed environment

Similarities

• Colleague friendships - although most are very focused at work, people often get together after work for a meal or drink.

• Commute time - anywhere between 15-60 is standard travel time to get to work.

I'm sure I will have other thoughts and comments about work as the summer progresses, so stay tuned.
